For those of you trying to figure out how to win Powerball, I thought it might be beneficial to learn the origins of lotteries and Powerball.

A lottery is a game of chance or a method of raising funds, by selling  a large number  of chances, then a drawing is held for money or prizes. This idea can be traced far back in mankind's history. Funds raised by lotteries have been used to finance defense, wars, education, and a good number of societal and governmental uses for which a large bit of funding was required.

Earliest evidence of an organized lottery has been traced back to the Han Dynasty in ancient China, between 205 and 187 B.C. Keno,  a game where players choose a subset of a group of numbers, and then another subset of these numbers is drawn at random was created by this early civilization. Players must match their numbers with numbers that were chosen at random in order to win, with the number of matches determining the level of success in the game. It is believedthat the Great Wall of China was partially funded through such lotteries.

In the 1400, French towns used lotteries to fund defense improvements. Sanctioned by King Francis in 1520; they were soon forbidden for 200 years after the first official attempt. In 1530, La Lotto de Firenze in Florence, Italy, became the first municipal lottery to give out monetary awards to winners. In time, other Italian cities did the same, as the first lottery had proven very successful.

In 1567, Queen Elizabeth I established the first English state lottery, as approximately four hundred thousand tickets to win cash and other prizes were offered for sale. In 1612, the settlement of Jamestown in the New World was financed by the aide of another English lottery. Other English colonies soon followed. The first colonial lottery was organized in colonial Massachusetts in 1744 to help pay off militia debts. The first American lottery wasn't formed until the year 1776. This time, the funding was going to fund the American Revolution. Unfortunately, the result of the lottery was not as successful as the war. More successful lotteries were introduced during that time period to help build several colleges and universities, such as Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, and Dartmouth.

By the beginning of the 19th century, the popularity of lotteries began to be overshadowed by corruption, as people tried to make money on the side using mischievious practices. People often would wager on the side, or would outright scalp the tickets. It was long before there began a movement to disallow lotteries. In 1827, it was illegal for postmasters to sell lottery tickets. Soon, lotteries became unlawful in most states. In 1868, the US Congress passed a law making the use of mail for lotteries illegal.

In the modern age, lotteries are far more accepted, as most states in the U.S. have some form of state lottery, and now participate in larger national lotteries, such as Powerball or Mega Millions. These lotteries pay out huge, multi-million dollar jackpots and sell hundreds of millions of tickets. The money from these lotteries is typically distributed to each state to help fund certain governmental funtions, such as education. Lotteries are surely more popular today as they have been in the past, due to the technology now available.

The age of the Internet has readily made available many resources to the avid lottery player to aid them in their quest on learning how to win Powerball. It can also be noted that powerball number generators can easily be found online.
